Car lubricants and engine oils ensure your car’s engine is kept clean and maintains its great performance, an essential part of maintaining a healthy vehicle. The engine oil you need will depend on your car’s needs. There are 3 main types of engine oil: synthetic, semi-synthetic and mineral which each offer different benefits.
See RAC Shop’s complete range of car lubricants which will not only clean your engine to remove sludge and grime but increase engine performance too. Specially developed compounds are carefully blended together to formulate the top-of-the-range engine oils here at RAC Shop.
If your MOT is approaching or you're due for a car service, make sure to schedule it with RAC for professional and reliable assistance.
What engine oil do I need?
The engine oil your car requires depends on many factors. Whether you use synthetic oil or mineral oil will depend on the age of your vehicle. It’s also important to consider whether your car is petrol or diesel, as certain oil will need to be used depending on the fuel type. You can then consider the viscosity score of the oil you purchase depending on the performance you need and how many miles you drive.
What are the 3 types of engine oil?
There are three main types of engine oil: synthetic, semi-synthetic and mineral. Mineral oil is the most basic type of engine oil and is refined and processed from crude oil. Synthetic oil is made from chemical compounds which provide better performance than mineral oil. Semi synthetic oil is a blend of the two and offers the benefits of synthetic oil without the premium price tag.
How often should engine oil be changed?
How often you change your engine oil depends on your vehicle age, the type of oil you use and your driving conditions. Most manufacturers recommend changing oil every 5,000-7,500 miles, however, if you use synthetic oil, you could get 15,000 miles out of it before needing to change.
